In 2000, FIFA named Real Madrid as the Best Club of the 20th Century. The honour was bestowed during a ceremony held by the international body in Rome, and Florentino Pérez and Alfredo Di Stéfano accepted the award. Real Madrid triumphed with more than 42% of the votes, ahead of Manchester United and Bayern Munich, the next teams in the ranking with 9.69% and 9.18% of the votes respectively.

This award honoured Real Madrid's achievements up to that time and its significance in the development of football at world football level. At that time, our club's trophy cabinet boasted 8 European Cups, 2 Intercontinental Cups, 2 UEFA Cups, 2 Latin Cups, 27 La Liga titles, 17 Copa del Rey trophies, 5 Spanish Super Cups, 1 Copa de la Liga and 1 Copa Iberoamericana.
