Official Announcement: Passing away of Franz Beckenbauer

Real Madrid C. F., the club's President and its Board of Directors are deeply saddened by the passing of Franz Beckenbauer, one of the biggest legends of European and world football.

Real Madrid would like to send its condolences and expresses its affection to his family, his teammates, his clubs and all his loved ones.

Franz Beckenbauer played for Bayern Munich, New York Cosmos and Hamburg. With Bayern Munich he won 3 European Cups, 1 Intercontinental Cup, 1 European Cup Winners' Cup, 4 Bundesligas and 4 German Cups. With Hamburg he won 1 Bundesliga and with the New York Cosmos he won the North American Soccer League 3 times.

He earned 103 caps for Germany, 50 of them as captain, and was World Cup winner in 1974 and Euro champion in 1972.

Franz Beckenbauer won 2 Ballon d'Or awards throughout his career, in 1972 and 1976.

Franz Beckenbauer won the World Cup as a coach with Germany in 1990. And as coach of Bayern Munich he won 1 Bundesliga and 1 UEFA Cup.

Franz Beckenbauer was Bayern Munich president from 1994 to 2009, when he was appointed honorary president.

Franz Beckenbauer has passed away at the age of 78. May he rest in peace.
