Real Madrid beat Monbus Obradoiro and beat their record number of wins in a year (69). Tavares, Hezonja and Musa were outstanding.
Real Madrid are still unstoppable. In addition to winning tonight against Monbus Obradoiro, they achieved a new record. This is has now become the year with the most wins (69) after beating the record of 2019. The league leader gave another demonstration of its strength in both defence and offence on one of the most complicated courts in the championship and continues to be unbeatable away from home with a record of six wins and no defeats. Tavares (13 points and 20 PIR), Hezonja (16 and 19) and Musa (17 and 16) led our team.
There was a great atmosphere at the Fontes do Sar in Santiago de Compostela to welcome Real Madrid. Both teams came out at a fast pace and countered the opponent's attacks. Alocén looked for Tavares in the zone and between them they led our team in offence coupled with a good Hezonja in defence. But Obradoiro gradually imposed their rebounding prowess and played with quick transitions orchestrated by Kovliar. Between the point guard, Howard and Scrubb they managed to put their team ahead in the first quarter (19-15).
Madrid respond
Chus Mateo looked for solutions on the bench and brought in a more physical line-up. The duo Ndiaye-Musa gave a boost especially in defence to our team, which managed a 2-12 (min. 15). Monbus were winning in the rebounding, but they could not score easily. That and Poirier's good performance at the low post led the madridistas to a +10 lead. The reaction of Moncho Fernández's team was not long in coming however and the first half ended with a tight 34-39.
After the break, the dynamic was the same as in the first half. For every Madrid basket, the Galician team responded with another. Points from Llull, Tavares and Abalde allowed them to manage their lead. Obradoiro began to increase their defensive performance. But it was not enough. Chus Mateo's men broke the local resistance and began to distance themselves with three consecutive three-pointers from Hezonja, Rudy and Sergio Rodríguez (48-62; min. 30).
69th win in 2023
Madrid managed their cushion well in the final quarter. At no time did they give Monbus a chance, who lost steam due to the solidity of our team. Hezonja was now pile-driving his opponents with 13 points and four rebounds along with 8 assists from Sergio Rodríguez. Moncho Fernández's team fought to get closer in the last minutes but their efforts were not rewarded and the leader picked up another league victory to beat the record of wins in a year (69). Chus Mateo's side now have five more games in 2023 to extend this record.
