The Whites picked up their sixth Euroleague win at home with an outstanding performance from Maledon (25 points and 34 PIR) and Campazzo (20 and 25).
Real Madrid secured their sixth win in the Euroleague after beating Zalgiris at the Movistar Arena, in the match corresponding to the 12th round of the competition. Our team played a solid first half, but the visitors turned the result around in the third quarter. Madrid reacted in the last quarter and, with a great performance from Maledon (25 points and 34 PIR), Tavares (12 points and 25 PIR), Campazzo (20 and 25) and Lyles (21 and 22), decided the game in the final minutes.
The early stages of the game were even. The difference was minimal until after the first five minutes, when, after a great block by Tavares, our boys opened a gap on the scoreboard. Campazzo was the main point of reference in attack with 12 points and 4/4 in two-point shots. Although Zalgiris tried to close the gap, the madridistas took the first period by 22-16.
Scariolo's men maintained control at the start of the second quarter, establishing their rhythm and increasing the difference to 12 points. Feliz shone at the back (4 turnovers). Still, the Lithuanian side reacted: they increased the intensity of their play and punished from the perimeter with three consecutive three-pointers to reduce the deficit (37-33). Madrid were able to adjust their defence before the break, and with a final burst from Tavares and Lull in attack, they went into the dressing room with a six-point lead (43-37).
Maledon, key
The tone changed after the restart due to the high tempo imposed by Zalgiris, who turned the game around and led by 7 points, supported by the performances of Tubelis and Francisco. But Madrid did not give up. Tavares took command of the court, signing a double-double (12 points and 10 rebounds), and with Maledon's points (18), the game entered the last quarter tied (62-62).
The best was yet to come, because the fourth period was fast-paced from the start. Both teams deployed their full arsenal in attack. The Palacio witnessed a spectacular duel between two French teammates: Maledon and Francisco (who finished with 34 points and 37 PIR). The game did not give respite, but Scariolo's team got it right at the right time to take the lead in the final minutes. Despite the Lithuanian team's final attempts to force overtime, Madrid came away with a hard-fought 100-99 victory.
