The Whites were unable to maintain their unbeaten run at the Palacio.
Real Madrid lost to Panathinaikos in the 11th round of the Euroleague. The Whites, who were undefeated at the Movistar Arena this season, improved after the break but were unable to overturn the lead built up in the first two quarters by a Greek side who were very clinical. Tavares and Feliz were the standout performers for Scariolo's side, while Deck played his 400th game as a Madrid player.
The game started with a great pace of scoring for both teams. Feliz led Madrid with 7 points, but Panathinaikos took an early lead (9-15, min. 5). After the first time-out of the game, the Greeks continued to pull away thanks to a 0-9 run, but baskets from Hezonja, Abalde and Tavares reduced the deficit. The first period ended with a score of 16-22.
With the start of the second quarter came Len's first basket in his debut at the Palacio. Maledon reduced the gap to four points with an impressive dunk, but the Greeks didn't let up. Baskets by TJ Shorts and Faried (11 and 10 points), the success from three-point range (7/13) and their very low percentage of turnovers gave the visitors a 14-point lead at half-time (38-52).
Comeback attempt
Scariolo's team improved their offensive sensations at the start of the third quarter. Feliz, who scored 9 points, tried to lead the comeback, supported by Tavares and Lyles. However, Panathinaikos managed to put the lead back to 14 at the end of the quarter (59-73, min. 30).
Our team began to loosen up in attack, but were unable to reduce the visitors' lead in the final quarter. The comeback was resisted by the pace imposed by Ataman's team, who did not see their lead in danger (68-82, min. 36). Despite the effort of the madridistas, who were able to close the gap on several occasions, Panathinaikos found a way to defend the result until the end (77-87, min.40).
