Real Madrid will travel to Barcelona with the option of sealing their place in the LaLiga final after winning again at the WiZink Center in the second Clasico of the semi-finals. This time they withstood their opponents' pressure in the first 19 minutes and from then on they were unstoppable with a great third quarter. Hezonja, with a very complete performance (12 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and 21 PIR) was the best of the team along with Tavares (12 points and 9 rebounds), Musa (18 points in 21 minutes) and Llull (18). With 68 wins, this is our season with the most wins, equalling 2013/14. On Sunday, the third round, the first at the Palau Blaugrana (6:30pm CEST).
The start of the game already suggested a different unfolding to that of two days ago. The first quarter was a rollercoaster ride. Barcelona started better with a revolution in their quintet and trying to put more speed into the game (3-9, min. 3). Madrid adjusted their defence and closed down the zone, where the blaugranas had been scoring easily. From there, they went on an 11-0 run, with Tavares as the starting point for their attack and three-pointers from Musa and Abalde, which took them into the lead (20-17, min. 9).
Half-time lead
The game did not let up at any time and the alternations were a constant in the first half. The visitors regained control with another good start in the second quarter, taking advantage of some comfortable Madrid shots that did not go in to run and punish our defensive balance. Chus Mateo looked to the old guard. Rudy brought more intensity at the back, Hezonja was inspired and the team reduced their opponents' production, which began to be limited to Parker. Llull took over the offensive duties and entered the game as he left it on Wednesday. 12 points in seven minutes led another reaction that Campazzo culminated with a three-pointer to go into the break four up (44-40).
Madrid found more balance in their play after the break. They were more solid at the back with great defensive work, exemplified by Causeur, who completely manhandled Laprovittola. They controlled the rebounding and turnovers, and were very consistent in attack, where several players joined in. Hezonja was everywhere, adding points, rebounds and assists. He had a great game. Campazzo, Musa and Tavares also contributed to Madrid's lift-off with a 23-10 run in eight minutes and a +14 lead. Vesely and Parra put up a fight, getting to within seven points and with possession to go further down. But there was Llull. The captain closed the quarter with a three-pointer from almost half-court to the ecstasy of the WiZink Center (73-62, min. 30).
Another team performance
Llull once again undermined Barcelona's morale as best he knew how. With that basket, Madrid lit the fuse in attack with a masterclass in sharing the ball. First, it ended with several dunks from Poirier and then three consecutive three-pointers from Rudy (who received a standing ovation when he was substituted), Sergio Rodríguez, leaving Satoransky seated, and Yabusele. Barcelona tried, always with Vesely's help, but our team showed firmness and from a great collective game in attack, with five players in double digits in scoring and surpassing 100 points (since 1994 no team had scored more than 97 points in two consecutive games in a semi-final), they sealed the 68th victory of the season before heading to the Palau (104-98).
