Real Madrid got back on track in the Euroleague with another win, their seventh in the last eight games for a total of 13. Our team had to work hard against an opponent who made the game very difficult with their superiority in offensive rebounds (21). But they rallied and ended up winning in an epic finish with a three-pointer by Hezonja with 0.2 seconds left after being down by four points entering the final minute. Campazzo, with 22 points and 29 PIR, and Tavares, 10 and 19, were also key to the win.
Madrid began by taking the initiative in the first few minutes with a fluid attacking game, with Campazzo (7 points), Musa (5) and Tavares (5) hogging the scoring, and winning the rebounding game. But turnovers gave Baskonia some easy points on the counter-attack rather than in static play, and they managed to level the score at the end of the first quarter (22-21).
Parity
The home side stayed ahead with Hezonja, who Samanic could not stop playing as a number four (7 points in a row), Feliz dishing out assists and Garuba doing a good job in the paint (4 and 3 rebounds). The 33-28 lead in the 15th minute was Madrid's maximum advantage in the first half. Offensive rebounds were starting to be a problem and Baskonia took full advantage of Moneke and Hall in the paint. A 9-17 run led by Forrest and Rogkavopoulos allowed them to go three points up at the break (42-45).
While continuing with their deficit in defensive rebounding, Baskonia were ahead, albeit by no more than five points. The presence of Tavares, sidelined in the second quarter for two personal fouls, improved Madrid's level in the zone for a few minutes. A 10-2 run, with another 7 consecutive points from Hezonja, levelled things up midway through the third period. However, Madrid could not control the rebounding and the visitors punished their second options from the perimeter (64-67, min.30).
Chus Mateo put Garuba alongside Tavares to solve the rebounding problem and he found the key. The Madrid duo had a great defensive impact. Campazzo put Madrid 5 up at 74-69. But Baskonia again hit an offensive streak to go into the last five minutes 74-75. Madrid's reaction was as quick as it was forceful. They raised their defensive level in the following plays and with the Argentinian point guard leading the way they went on a 10-0 run to go nine up at the 36' mark (84-75). Baskonia, with Rogkavoupolos in great form (2 three-pointers) and a 3+1 from Moneke, went ahead 84-88 with a minute and a half to go.
Super Mario decides
Hezonja replied and it was 87-88 with 27 seconds to go. On the next play, Baldwin missed two free throws but the rebound went to the visitors. Samanic went to the line and scored the second to make it 87-89 with 17 seconds to play. Madrid squeezed possession, found Hezonja and the forward hit a three-pointer with two-tenths of a second left to pull off the comeback and send the Madrid fans into ecstasy (90-89, min.40).
