Río Breogán
Real Madrid
Madrid failed to reach the final of the EncestaRías tournament after leading for most of the match.
Real Madrid failed to secure victory in the semi-finals of the EncestaRías tournament against Río Breogán. Scariolo's men held the initiative for more than three quarters, with leads of up to 19 points, but the Galician side came back in the final stretch and forced overtime, where they were more accurate and took the victory. Procida and Lyles made their debuts for Madrid. The latter was Madrid's top scorer alongside Okeke, with 14 points.
This Saturday, our team will conclude its participation in the tournament against Baskonia (6pm CEST).
Madrid set a fast pace from the start. A strong start, combining aggressive defence and elaborate attacks with good shooting percentages, led to a 13-1 run in their favour within four minutes. But Río Breogán reacted with a series of three-pointers.
Brankovic and Aranitovic, with a double, stopped Madrid from breaking the game open early on. Llull, with 8 points, led the visitors' scoring in the first quarter, where Scariolo used all 12 players, including Procida and Lyles (16-21).
Another Madrid onslaught
This time it was in the final stretch of the first half. The game entered a phase of less accuracy for much of the second quarter. Neither team was able to achieve its objective. Neither Madrid was able to pull away, nor Río Breogán was able to catch up.
The Galicians closed the gap to 5 points at 27-32 in the 18th minute. However, Scariolo's team, with Feliz, Procida and Lyles, went on a 9-2 run in the remaining two minutes to go into the break 12 points ahead (29-41).
It was after the break that Madrid finally seemed to get going.
They stepped up their defence, closing down the defensive rebound, and ran. With Campazzo directing play, Lyles showing off his skills (8 points in this period) and Tavares dominating the area around the basket, our team opened up a 19-point lead on several occasions in the third quarter. But the home side did not give up and continued to fight.
Even finish
Between the end of the third quarter and the final quarter, the Galicians closed the gap. Madrid hit a rough patch and Río Breogán took advantage to tie the game at 67 with one minute remaining. Two free throws from García put our team up by two, but Cook tied it at 69. Feliz missed on the last possession and the game went into overtime. The deadlock persisted in the extra period. The Galicians took a 4-point lead, but Madrid responded with three-pointers from Campazzo and Okeke to make it 74-77. In the final minute, Casimiro's men were better in attack and, with a 9-1 run, won the game (83-78, min. 40).
