Real Madrid lose in a game that was an uphill struggle from the first half.
Real Madrid lost on their visit to Monaco in Euroleague game 22. Our team did not have their day at either end of the court and trailed the whole game. Chus Mateo's side remain leaders of the competition however, with four more wins than the chasing pack.
Madrid, who were without Tavares and Llull, knew it was going to be a very physically demanding game and that is how Monaco made it look right from the start. The home side were in clear control in the first quarter thanks to their success in three-pointers (5) and with many players scoring. This allowed them to impose a very high tempo in attack and take a lead of more than 10 points against a Madrid team that was not working. Musa and Poirier were our best players in this period (33-20).
Against the current
Chus Mateo looked for solutions with five short players, with Deck and Yabusele as the inside pair. And he found them at the start of the second quarter, when Madrid had their best spell of the game. They gained intensity and reduced Monaco's scoring. Sergio Rodríguez's good performance, scoring eight points in a row, seemed to give us wings after a 2-8 run. But we fell back into the same mistakes, rashness and conceding, and the home side took advantage with Loyd as the protagonist to go 16 up at half-time (56-40).
Home win
Madrid tried but nothing came of it. Monaco played with the confidence of having a large lead and little by little they began to make even more ground. Losses were a major handicap for our team, which prevented us from picking up any rhythm or continuity, quite the opposite of Obradovic's team, who managed the difference until the end (98-74, min.40). Sunday will open a new chapter of La Liga at the WiZink Center against Surne Bilbao Basket (6:30pm CET).
