96-72: Madrid lose away to Río Breogán
MATCH REPORT.Edu Bueno
Real Madrid were unable to continue their winning streak away from home on their visit to Lugo on league matchday 26. They lost to Río Breogán in a game which was complicated from the start and in which the 31-17 deficit in the third quarter was insurmountable for our team. It's now time to turn the page quickly given that we play for top spot in the Euroleague regular season in Tel Aviv next Thursday. Deck was our best player, racking up 20 index rating points.

There was a great atmosphere at the Pazo Provincial Dos Deportes in Lugo, including an emotional homage to Musa from his former team as they welcomed Real Madrid. Driven by that energy, Río Breogán came out on top, combining aggressiveness in defence and high percentages in their three-point shooting 4/5 which enabled them to take control of the game Hollatz, 10 points. Our team struggled to deliver in offence and the 10 turnovers were a burden that the home side took full advantage of in the first quarter 21-12, min.10.
Reaction in fits and starts
Chus Mateo looked for solutions on the bench and chose to play a low five for the whole of the second quarter: first with Ndiaye at centre, then Yabusele and finally opted for Hezonja. It had the desired effect and surprised Río Breogán. Madrid started to work on both sides of the court. They closed passing lanes and cut off the Galician side's outside threat, who were then bereft of offensive rebounds as well. This gave us the freedom to run and hurt their defensive balance with a much more assertive and unhurried attack, with a number of players contributing. Deck 7 points, Causeur and Yabusele 5 each were outstanding. Little by little they reduced the difference to go into the break 39-34.

With a 3-7 run at the start of the third quarter, the deficit was reduced to one point. At 42-41, it looked like the comeback could be on the cards but it was not to be. Encouraged by their great outside shooting and Nakic's inspired performance, Río Breogán opened up a significant gap that exceeded 20 points in the last period. We also lost Tavares, ejected for two technical fouls. Madrid did everything in their power to get back into the game in the final period against a highly confident home side 96-72.
