Real Madrid suffered a defeat against Baskonia at the WiZink Center in round 23 of the league season. Chus Mateo's men got off to a good start and even opened up a 14-point lead, but after that they were unable to find any continuity and their opponents turned the game around. Down by 8 points with four minutes to play, our team fought hard to come back and even went ahead. However, in the final stretch they were unable to get it right and the visitors won the game. Deck, with 21 points and 26 PIR, was the standout performer for our team.

A very good performance from Madrid, who started the game in complete control of the game both in defence, where they negated Baskonia's three-point threat and dominated the rebounding, and in attack, where they had high percentages in shooting and every player on the court putting in impressive performances. Eight points apiece from Tavares and Deck as they proved to be a headache for the visitors in a great first quarter for our team 27-15, min. 10.

Baskonia stayed true to their playing style, attempting to speed up the game with very short possessions. Madrid were not as sharp on the offensive in the second quarter but they always managed to find an answer to every attack from the visitors. Rudy and Causeur, when the visitors were seven points behind, were the first to establish the highest difference in the 15th minute 40-26. And after a run by Peñarroya's team featuring Giedraitis, Deck and Tavares stepped up, making the score 45-39 at the break.
The visitors turned the game around in the third quarter. Problems with rebounding appeared again for Madrid, as their opponents stepped up the intensity of the game, leading to a lot of Madrid turnovers. Howard and Enoch made the game difficult at times and we found ourselves 7 down in the 27th minute. Then, Madrid hit back with pride. Things were going against them but they showed grit and matched their intensity. Deck and Hanga pushed the team on, reacting with a 13-7 run to go into the final quarter just one down 69-70, min. 30.

A comeback without reward in the end
The game became even more complicated. The side from Vitoria were eight up at 72-80 in the 35th minute, but Madrid showed their fighting instinct once again. Two outstanding plays from Hanga and seven consecutive points from Musa spearheaded a 14-5 run that completed the comeback 86-85. In the last three minutes, there was a mad rush of hasty play on our part. Baskonia kept their calm with their decision making and eventually clinched the game 88-95, min. 40.
