Scariolo: “We’ll have to put in a complete performance against Hapoel”
“The team is growing, we're on an upward trajectory,” said the coach ahead of the EuroLeague clash.
Sergio Scariolo spoke to the press on the eve of the clash between Hapoel Tel Aviv and Real Madrid in Round 13 of the EuroLeague, set to be played at Bulgaria's Botevgrad Arena (Tuesday, 7:00 pm CET): “It's a good time to face the best. They've shown that with some impressive displays, an incredible level in offense and solid defense, which means they fully deserve their position in the table right now."
“We're well aware that we have to limit their broad range of weapons, as well as their athletic capabilities and play on the inside. We'll have to put in a very complete performance if we want to make an impact. The team is growing, we're clearly on an upward trajectory."
“It's a similar game to the Panathinaikos one, given the way they play. They'll try and find matchups and force us into changes they think are advantageous - so we'll have to respond well. We have to find ways to be in front of the ball, guard their shots and limit their percentages, but at the same time, they have an inside duo that's the best in the EuroLeague."
Hapoel Tel Aviv's successes
“Itoudis has done a great job. They have limited rotations and have suffered few injuries, which always helps the team. But of course, it's fruit of good work by the coach. They're intelligently organised, have a core of players that have remained from last year. They've done a great job this summer in order to be competitive now."
Eclipsing the leaders
“It would be fantastic, but there are almost three quarters of the competition left to play. We try and go out to win every game, that's what we train for. There are games that look very difficult on paper, but that doesn't mean we're not in a position to win them."
On Almansa's call-up for Spain
“I hope he enjoys it. I'm not going to say he's a veteran, but he's played for the national team before and he knows what it's all about. There's a wonderful atmosphere and it's the ideal setting to compete and enjoy yourself. I hope he delivers some good performances and can help Spain win games."
Hezonja
“We know he's a player of huge potential, with a degree of inconsistency in his performances. Everyone's goal is to try and regulate that a bit. Even the bad days are another step in that direction, because they allow you to reflect and keep your feet on the ground. I have absolute faith in him, he's an important player."
