Today marks 65 years since the basketball team's European Cup debut
Real Madrid is the most decorated team in the competition with 10 titles.
On the 12th of March 1958, Real Madrid's basketball team began their legendary journey in the European Cup. Our team made their debut in the competition with a visit to Portuguese team Barreirense, winning 51-68. The return leg took place on the 20th of April, ending in another win for the Whites, this time 86-40. The inaugural edition saw Real Madrid eliminate Belgium's Royal IV in the quarter-finals, before missing out on the semi-final against ASK Riga due to political issues.
Sixty-five years after their European Cup debut, Real Madrid dominate the tournament's honours list with 10 titles. The first came in 1964, with Joaquín Hernández as coach. The madridistas enjoyed a golden decade, lifting the continental trophy in 1965, 1967, 1968 and 1974, all led by Pedro Ferrándiz on the bench. Another legendary coach, Lolo Sainz, then took the team to La Sexta and La Séptima 1978 and 1980.
The legend grows
The next success in the competition came in 1995, as Sabonis dominated European basketball and Obradovic directing proceedings from the sidelines. The latest wins came in 2015 and 2018, thanks to the already legendary squad headed by Pablo Laso.
