Real Madrid won their first Intercontinental Basketball Cup 48 years ago. It was on 4 October 1976 that our team was crowned champions in Buenos Aires after coming first in a group system made up of six teams. Two more consecutive titles followed in 1977 and 1978.

Real Madrid, then coached by Lolo Sainz, won all five matches and topped the table ahead of Mobilgirgi Varese. Madrid beat Amazonas Franca Brasil in the first game (83-70); ASFA Dakar in the second (89-51); Obras Sanitarias in the third (109-89); the Italians in the fourth (79-74), in what would be the decisive game as both had won three games; and the Missouri Tigers in the last (97-102).
