On 24 June 1978, Real Madrid secured the trophy against Obras Sanitarias of Argentina (103-104).
On 24 June 1978, Real Madrid claimed their third Intercontinental Cup in basketball. This year's competition was held in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and the madridistas competed together with Brazil's Sirio, Italy's Pallacanestro Varese, the University of Rhode Island (USA) and Obras Sanitarias (Argentina). The Whites and the hosts won their first three matches, which meant that the winners were decided on the last matchday with a clash between the two teams.
Coughran, with 26 points, Brabender (25) and Szczerbiak (24) were the standout performers in the win over Obras Sanitarias, but it was a basket by Prada with two seconds left that settled the score at 103-104. This title triumph added gloss to the year 1978, a year in which the club also won the European Cup a few months earlier. This was also the third consecutive Intercontinental Cup triumph for Real Madrid.
