Gran Canaria-Real Madrid: all out for a place in LaLiga semi-finals
Our team will try to secure the second and final point of the tie away from home (8:30pm CEST).
The quarter-final series between Real Madrid and Gran Canaria moves to the islands for the second round. With 1-0 in our favour after last Wednesday's win at the WiZink Center, the team coached by Chus Mateo will be looking for the win that certifies their ticket to the semi-finals against an opponent playing in front of their home fans and with the obligation to win.
Madrid got off to a strong start in the playoffs, showing all their potential and leaving Gran Canaria with no chance in the first game. The 105-70 scoreline was a good reflection of this team's team worth. They put the game to bed in the second half with a 59-32 run. They scored 105 points, their sixth best score in a playoff, and it is the third game in May in which they have surpassed the hundred mark (102 against Baskonia in Euroleague and 106 in La Liga). In addition, the 35 point difference was their third biggest ever in a playoff.
Gran Canaria will be extra motivated to play in front of their home fans. It is a final for them and they will be a much more dangerous opponent. In the first quarter they showed off their firepower. They're a team with a serious threat from three-point range and versatility in inside positions with Shurna, Pelos, Happ and Lammers. On the outside, their benchmarks are AJ Slaughter and Brussino. The strength under the hoops of Tavares and Poirier will again be a determining factor for our team, as will the involvement of all the players. On Wednesday, all 11 players scored (Rudy had to go off three minutes after coming on due to a bruised hand).
The second game in Las Palmas
Madrid travel to the Gran Canarian court with a 1-0 lead for the fourth time in a quarter-final playoff. In the previous three, in the 2014/15, 2020/21 and 2022/23 seasons, we won the second game and reached the semi-finals. In addition, we have a full house of wins against the islanders in this round. One win separates us from the next round.
