Real Madrid-Baskonia: back to the EuroLeague 22 days later

NEWS STORY. 14/01/2022. Edu Bueno

The Whites will be playing their 500th match in the competition, having not played in it since 23 December (8:45 pm CET).

This evening, after a 22-day wait and three postponed games (Fenerbahçe, Unics Kazan and Crvena zvezda), Real Madrid return to EuroLeague action at the WiZink Center, following on from their victory over CSKA Moscow last time out on Christmas Eve. The Whites welcome Baskonia in Round 21 of the competition, which will see the hosts reach the 500-game milestone in the European league, since its change of name. Pablo Laso’s side are unbeaten on home court and will be looking for their 15th win in this season’s EuroLeague.

This will be Real Madrid's first appearance in the competition this year and the Whites currently sit second, with a record of 14 wins in 17 games, boasting a 9-0 home record and go into this match-up having triumphed in 9 of their last 10 games. Baskonia have improved in the competition and although they are at the bottom of the standings, they are only two wins away from the playoffs (7-11). They recently clinched victory in Munich and beat Barça in Vitoria by 19 points.

The madridistas average 7.3 more points than the side from Vitoria (79.4) and concede less than seven in comparison. Spahija's charges are a complete team, who will demand the highest physical level from Madrid. They have very athletic players and two key men: Granger and Baldwin, as point guards; Giedraitis and Fontecchio, as small forwards; and Costello and Enoch, on the inside. Together, they have scored 85% of the team's points. This contrasts with our side, who have produced a team-wide contribution, with Tavares leading the way (12.2 points; 7.3 rebounds and 19.8 in PIR).

Third meeting of the campaign
Real Madrid have prevailed in the two games played to date, and did so convincingly in both of them - in the league by 65-83 and in the EuroLeague by 60-88. The last meeting, in November, saw our team finish with six players in double figures in scoring, led by Heurtel. On that day, the madridistas produced their best defensive performance of the season in this competition and also recorded the biggest win (+28). Defence, rebounding dominance and excellent attacking percentages were the hallmarks of both victories. Tonight, at the WiZink Center, Madrid will be hoping to celebrate the 500th anniversary with a win in front of their fans.
