Real Madrid gave every last ounce, but ultimately bow out of the Copa del Rey. The Whites dominated proceedings in a lively opening period which featured clear-cut chances at both ends. The two teams set their stalls out very early on, the madridistas seeking to boss possession, whilst Celta were intent on sitting back and looking to catch Madrid out on the counter. The first chance of note fell the way of the visitors, with Isco's effort from the edge of the area being gathered in by Sergio in the 6th minute.

The game was very open and just prior to the half-hour mark lady luck evaded the Whites. Cristiano Ronaldo met Isco's cross and Sergio got the slightest of touches to his header effort to push it onto the crossbar, the ball crashed back down to the feet of the Portuguese forward, who produced a reflex reaction to connect with it and was desperately unlucky to this time see his stabbed effort hit the upright.

Celta draw first blood
Real Madrid deserved to be ahead, but the final minutes of the half were all about Celta. Casemiro's clearance fell to Aspas, who failed to finish with just Casilla to beat on 33'. The madridista custodian was again in the thick of the action seven minutes later when he pushed a Guidetti effort behind for a corner in a one-on-one.

Cristiano Ronaldo has netted free-kick goals in LaLiga, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey.

It looked like the game would be goalless at half-time, but Celta went ahead on 44 minutes. The protagonists were the same as before and Casilla proved his mettle yet again. Luck was not on Real Madrid’s side however as the ball went in after Danilo made contact with it.

Sensational free-kick from Cristiano Ronaldo
The Whites still needed to score two goals, this time just to take the knockout tie into extra time, and there were 45 minutes left in which to do so. Celta tightened up defensively and Real Madrid were desperate in their efforts to score. Kroos had a great chance in the 59th minute to score with a free-kick. He opted to fake a cross and send a low shot in that went toward the post, but all Sergio could do was palm the shot out for a corner. This was all part of the build-up to Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal three minutes later. The Portuguese forward scored with a sublime shot from far out. 1-1 and everything still to be play for.

Lucas Vázquez pulls it level
Real Madrid looked to be the only team till out there fighting. Kroos sent in a 67th minute free-kick and Ramos headed in an effort from within the six-yard box, only for it to skid wide of the goal. Benzema also had a chance to score in that same minute, but his skewed shot went straight across the face of goal. The visitors’ assault was picking up momentum and Celta took to sending long balls up field. It was in one of these isolated moments of play that Wass was able to score in the 85th minute looking to put the tie beyond doubt. Lucas Vázquez momentarily gave Real Madrid hope with a goal from a corner. The Whites gave it all right up to the last, but today was simply not their day.
