Real Madrid's 2016/17 squad got their pre-season campaign underway against Paris Saint-Germain at the Ohio Stadium. Right from the first whistle it became apparent that the French outfit - who were playing their third warm-up game - were further ahead in their pre-season preparations than the Whites. Real Madrid had it all to do right from the off, after Jonathan Ikoné put PSG ahead on two minutes following a solo run. A reaction was called for and from this moment until the half-hour mark it was the Whites who enjoyed the game's only chances, with Mateo Kovacic coming the closest to scoring. With 18 minutes on the clock the Croatian let fly from the edge of the area, but Trapp got his fingertips to the effort to send it onto the post.

The final stages of the first half belonged to PSG and Thomas Meunier, who struck twice to extend the French side's lead. The first of his goals came on 35 minutes courtesy of an effort from the edge of the area and his second followed five minutes later when he slotted home after Kike Casilla had blocked his initial cross. There was however still time for another goal before the interval. Isco found himself out wide and burst into the area and after his cross clearly struck Serge Aurier on the hand Marcelo stepped up to convert the penalty. The sides went in with the scoreline reading 1-3, with a further 45 minutes still to come.

The academy takes centre stage
Just as he said he would in his pre-match press conference, Zinedine Zidane introduced a new starting XI for the second period, as several members of the Real Madrid Castilla squad were handed the opportunity to shine at the Ohio Stadium. Indeed, it was one of them, Mariano, who went in search of an early goal, but his effort was gathered in by Trapp.

With the academy youngsters putting in a spirited performance and Marco Asensio in the thick of things, the Whites dominated proceedings but were unable to find a route to goal. There was no change to the scoreline in the second half as Real Madrid's first pre-season outing ended 1-3. Next up for the European champions are Chelsea in Ann Arbor on Saturday.
