The Madrid City Council awarded the Medal of Madrid in the sports category to Sergio Llull, in a ceremony held at the Cibeles Palace, also attended by president Florentino Pérez. The captain of Real Madrid received this recognition from the mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida. The City Council's Governing Board honored Llull “for his unique example of dedication, discipline, and leadership skills, and for being a basketball legend at Real Madrid and with the Spanish national team.”

In his speech, the mayor highlighted: “Madrid rewards another extraordinary athlete. In Sergio Llull, we recognize a basketball legend. With 20 seasons at Real Madrid, he is the player with the most games, the most three-pointers, his unforgettable mandarinas, and the most assists in the history of a team where he has won over 25 titles and where I am sure he will bring me another jersey for my collection next weekend from Athens.”

“A player, therefore, who has been an essential pillar of the best era of the Spanish national team. But if there is something that defines his career, it is that he never falters. It is his competitive character and his bravery in decisive moments. When others hesitate, Sergio Llull steps forward to decide a game with the leadership that only the chosen ones, the greatest, possess.”
