The hero of the sixth European Cup

NEWS STORY. 21/02/2023

Amancio scored a stunning goal against Partizan in the 1966 Brussels final.

Following the first five consecutive European Cups, Real Madrid went on to lift the European trophy again six years later. Amancio was one of the stars of a squad that would go down in history in the 1965/66 season, a squad that also included legends such as Pirri, Velázquez, Grosso, Zoco and Pachín, among many others. Gento formed the connection between two winning generations, all of them coached by Miguel Muñoz.

On the road to la Sexta, Real Madrid knocked out Feyenoord in the first round, with Real Madrid coming back from 2-1 down in the first leg to win 5-0 at the Bernabéu. Scottish side Kilmarnock were their opponents in the Round of 16. Amancio got the second goal in the away leg (2-2), subsequently winning the tie at home (5-1). The Galician scored twice in the second leg of the quarter-final when beating Anderlecht (4-2), who had won in Belgium (1-0). Amancio was once again instrumental in the semi-finals against Inter Milan. Real Madrid won the first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu (1-0) and his goal at the San Siro proved decisive in securing a 1-1 draw to reach the final.

Goal in the final
Our team extended their legacy with a stunning victory over Partizan at the Heysel stadium in Brussels. Our team had to come back from Vasovic's opening goal in the first minutes of the second half to win the title. Amancio demonstrated that he was a worldwide star as he came up with a brilliant equaliser in the 70th minute, dribbling past his man and firing a low shot past the goalkeeper. It was a historic goal that preceded the other big moment of the final, when Serena sealed the 2-1 win with a long-range effort.
