The new EuroLeague campaign gets underway this Thursday and Real Madrid, the most decorated team in the competition with ten trophies, will go head-to-head with Panathinaikos (winners on six occasions) in the opening match at the OAKA Arena in Athens. Chus Mateo’s side, who came within a basket of clinching the trophy last season, will be vying to secure the Undécima. The path to success is both long and demanding, with seven months of the Regular Season, comprising 34 games. The top eight sides will progress to the playoffs, where four will then battle it out in the Final Four in May.
Eighteen teams will be participating in the EuroLeague this season. No Russians will be involved, but two historic teams, Virtus Bologna and Partizan, and another Spanish team, Valencia Basket, will be taking part. On top of the trophies, the madridistas have appeared in the most finals in the European Cup (19) and in recent years they have been regulars in the Final Four, with eight appearances since 2011.
Chus Mateo will be making his EuroLeague debut as head coach, but has already coached four of our team's games as Pablo Laso's assistant coach - this was last season when he won all four of them. For Sergio Llull, this will be his sixteenth competition, having cemented his place as one of the competition's all-time greats. In the match against Panathinaikos, he could become the Madrid player to have appeared the most times in the highest level of continental competition, moving ahead of Felipe Reyes (345).
