Real Madrid-Zalgiris: start of another marathon run of games

NEWS STORY. 12/11/2021. Edu Bueno

Our team take on the Lithuanian champions in the first of 5 games over the next 9 days (8:45pm CEST).

Real Madrid's marathon fixture list shows no sign of letting up. They now have a run of 5 games inside 9 days (6 in 14 to close out November). Tonight, they welcome Zalgiris Kaunas, who are yet to taste victory to the WiZink Center where our boys are unbeaten after 8 rounds of Euroleague action. The madridistas will be looking for their seventh win to remain towards the top of the table, but Laso will be without Randolph, Thompkins, Alocén and Williams-Goss.

The even nature of this European campaign means winning every home game is almost a requisite to be among the top teams. Real Madrid are part of the group currently chasing down leaders Olimpia Milan, who have one more win to their name but face a tough trip to Fenerbahçe this week. Laso's charges have picked up 5 wins in 6 games, despite playing the last three on the road. Since beating Fenerbahçe back on October 21, Madrid haven't played a Euroleague game at home, where they remain unbeaten to date (wins over Anadolu Efes, Panathinaikos, Monaco and Fenerbahçe). Zalgiris, meanwhile, are yet to put a victory on the board this season.

The Lithuanians have made big changes to their squad, bringing in highly experienced faces such as Strelnieks, Kalnietis and Giffey. Ulanovas is back, they've also signed Zoran Dragic recently and boast a versatile interior with two authentic No.5s in Nebo and Lauvergne. Zalgiris are scoring less points than any team in the competition on average (66.9), while Real Madrid's figures look better at home (83.5) and they possess one of the Euroleague's best defenses (71.5). The last meeting between the two sides came in February, ending in a 70-58 win for the madridistas.

More than one game every two days
Starting today, our team will play 5 games before the 21st (with one more to go to close out the third month of competitive action). On Sunday, they head to Urbas Fuenlabrada, before a Euroleague double-header next week against Asvel and KK Crvena Zvezda. This marathon run comes to an end against Coosur Betis at home, making it one game every 1.8 days.
