The Association of Spanish Sports Press recognised the achievements of Real Madrid at the 40th National Sports Gala, which was scheduled to have taken place in March 2020 but was postponed on account of the pandemic. The ceremony was held at Teruel’s Pabellón Los Planos, where the club was honoured for its 34th LaLiga title, secured in the 2019/20 campaign. Real Madrid’s director of institutional relations, Emilio Butragueño, was on hand to collect the award: “It’s a pleasure to be here and I want to express my thanks for the hospitality we’ve received and this award. Every trophy is very important for us, but this one really is all that more meaningful because it came at a very tough and painful time for everyone in which we all lost loved ones and it’s one that we really cherish”.

“As well as recognising the efforts of our players, coaches and everyone who made this title possible, before the start of this ceremony, representatives of groups who enabled life to keep going in our country came and stood up here and this trophy is also for them because without them those games likely wouldn’t have taken place. This trophy is for them and all those who left us during that period”.

Casillas lands award
Real Madrid legend and current deputy director general of the Real Madrid Foundation, Iker Casillas, was also recognised for his sporting career. There was reference to the World Cup trophy he captained Spain to in 2010 in South Africa. Meanwhile, fellow madridista legend, Felipe Reyes, attended the ceremony to pick up an award on behalf of the Spanish basketball team.
