Take a look back at the Whites’ goals in the finals won in 1960, 1998, 2002, 2014, 2016 and 2017.Real Madrid will look to win their third consecutive Club World Cup and the seventh in the club’s history when they take on Al Ain in Abu Dhabi (Saturday, 5:30pm CET). The Whites have won the title of World Champions more times than anyone else, ahead of the four titles won by Milan. We take a look back at the Intercontinental Cups of 1960, 1998 and 2002 and the Club World Cups of 2014, 2016 and 2017 won by the best team in history.
1960: First title against Peñarol
Real Madrid were crowned champions of the first Intercontinental Cup against Peñarol of Montevideo in a two-leg match. After drawing the first leg 0-0, the Whites were amongst the goals in the second leg (5-1) with Di Stéfano, Puskas and Gento leading the way.
1998: Raúl’s aguanís
The second world champions title came when they beat Vasco de Gama in the Intercontinental Cup in 1998. The game finished 2-1 and it was decided by a moment of genius by Raúl seven minutes from time, when he turned two defenders inside out before scoring.
2002: The third in the Centenary year
Real Madrid won their third world champions title in the Centenary year. Asuncion Olimpia from Paraguay were the opponents that the Whites beat 2-0 thanks to goals from Ronaldo and Guti at the International Stadium in Yokohama.
2014: Victory against San Lorenzo in Morocco
After winning la Décima, Real Madrid won the 2014 Club World Cup held in Morocco. In the semi-final they beat Cruz Azul (4-0) and in the final they beat San Lorenzo de Almagro (2-0) with goals from Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale.
2016: Five-time champions in Japan
Real Madrid were crowned five-time world champion in Japan. The 2-0 win against Club América secured their place in the final against Kashima Antlers. Cristiano Ronaldo, scorer of three goals, and Karim Benzema, sealed the 4-2 win in a match that was decided in extra time.
2017: The icing on the cake in the year with the club’s most titles
The team won their second consecutive Club World Cup, putting the finishing touch on the best year in the history of Real Madrid. They won the fifth title of 2017 in Abu Dhabi thanks to victories against Al Jazira in the semi-final (2-1) and Gremio in the final (1-0). Modric was awarded the Golden Ball for the tournament.
