The Real Madrid forward, who beat off Neuer and Robben, received the most votes from the 54 journalists representing each of the UEFA countries who gave their verdict based on sporting performances from the 2013-14 season.
The Portugal international was garlanded after an exceptional season, in which he won the European Cup and Copa del Rey with his side. On an individual note he was the top scorer in the Champions League with 17 goals (a new record in the competition), top goalscorer in the Spanish league with 31, and European Golden Boot (alongside Luis Suárez).
