Figo was peerless at dribbling and taking on opponents, and his perfect assists were a luxury for all of the forwards who played with him. He was a leader on the pitch who helped Real Madrid to win honours and further their legendary status. Along with Hierro, Raúl, Zidane and Ronaldo (enlazar fichas), among others, he was part of a true dream team.
From the very beginning of his career at Sporting Lisbon, it was clear that he was going to be a star and he was extremely successful at all of the clubs he played for. He arrived at the Santiago Bernabéu from Barcelona in the summer of 2000 as the club’s record signing at that time. He gave some truly superb performances for that all-conquering Real Madrid team and helped them to win seven trophies, including their ninth European Cup in Glasgow. Figo did not only win collective honours but also picked up several individual awards such as the Ballon d´Or, which he received as a Madrid player.
He is still the most capped Portuguese player and with his national team he played in two World Cups in Korea and Japan (2002) and Germany (206) where he reached the semi-finals. He almost enjoyed a historic victory for his country in the European Championship held in Portugal, but they were beaten by Greece in the final. Figo finished his career at Inter Milan, where he added to his already impressive list of honours.
