European Cup and league double in the same season

Bill Hanson was a Real Madrid player for one season, 1963-64, and played his part in the first European Cup win in the history of the team as well as a league title. The centre came with the reputation as one of the best college players in the United States and was one of the first foreigners to join the team, along with Luyk and Burgess.

Coach Joaquín Hernández used him as backup for his countrymen. Hanson took part in both games of the 1964 European Cup Final against Spartak Brno. He scored 6 points in the first leg and played a part in Madrid's comeback to win the title in the second leg. He passed away on 25 January 2018.
