27 years without Raimundo Saporta
A key figure in Real Madrid history passed away on 2 February 1997.
It is 27 years since the death of Raimundo Saporta. It was on 2 February 1997 that Real Madrid said farewell to a key figure in its history who, together with Santiago Bernabéu, played a key role in the development of the club to the point where it became the best in the world. Between 1952 and 1991, he was a member of our club, where he became vice-president and president of the basketball team. Thanks to his great contribution to the club, he was also named honorary president.
Along with his merits in building the Madrid legend, Raimundo Saporta carried out great work in other fields of Spanish sport, for which he received numerous awards, such as the Gold Medal for Sporting Merit.
Basketball
His importance in the sport was enormous. Before joining Real Madrid, he was a member of the Spanish Basketball Federation and throughout his career he completed an important career in the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). In his honour, the former European Cup Winners' Cup was called the Saporta Cup, and the basketball pavilion of the former Sports City was named after him. At the time of his death he was 70 years old.
