Real Madrid became European basketball champions for the sixth time in its history on 6 April 1978. Four years after winning la Quinta in Nantes against Pallacanestro Varese, our team beat the Italian team again in the final in Munich (75-67). The victory also served to break the tie between the two clubs, who until then had dominated the winners' list with five titles apiece.

Szczerbiak (26 points) and Brabender (16) were Madrid's top scorers in the final, which reached half-time with Pallacanestro Varese almost level at 40-41. The team coached by Lolo Sainz, who won the first of his two European Cups as Real Madrid coach, played an excellent second half and eventually defeated the Italians. This victory helped to build on Real Madrid's reign in the European Cup honours list, which currently stands at 11 titles.
