On 4 June 1980, Real Madrid secured their 14th Copa de España crown. The Santiago Bernabéu hosted an all madridista final, as the side's opponents were Castilla. The first team thrashed the academy side with goals from Juanito (2), Santillana, Sabido, Del Bosque and García Hernández to secure the double, having previously clinched the LaLiga title.
Vujadin Boskov's Real Madrid eliminated Logroñés (last 16), Betis (quarter-finals) and Atlético Madrid (semi-finals) en route to the final. Meanwhile, Castilla faced Athletic, Real Sociedad and Sporting Gijón on their way, and their achievement in the tournament was rewarded with qualification for the following season's Cup Winners' Cup.
