79-77: Williams-Goss leads another Real Madrid fightback

The point guard scored 9 points in a row in the final two minutes to complete the turnaround in a game that Betis led 70-77. Gran Canaria will be our quarter-final opponents.
Real Madrid closed out the Regular League Season with their 28th win, getting the better of Betis at the WiZink CenterChus Mateo's boys had to seal another remarkable turnaround to win a match they were trailing by 70-77 with two minutes left to play. But we know this team never gives in and they battled to the end as the impressive Williams-Goss, with nine points in the closing stretch, led a 9-0 run to ensure another win for the European champions, on the night they presented La Undécima to the WiZink Center. Tavares was the top performer (23) and Llull played his 1,000 game in our colours. The playoffs get underway with a quarter-final against Gran Canaria at home on Sunday at 12:30pm.

Beyond the game itself, it was a day for celebration at the WiZink Center. The team returned home with Undécima and presented it to the fans in attendance, while the youth team did the same with their own Euroleague trophy. Betis formed a guard of honour for the champions, a nice gesture as the game got underway in dominant fashion for our team. We quickly imposed real pace in offense with Yabusele (6 points), Musa (6) and Abalde (5) racing to 24-17 in the first quarter. With four minutes on the clock, Llull made his 1,000 appearance for our team, becoming the second madridista to reach the milestone, after Felipe Reyes.

Even game
The home side began to lose a bit of energy at the back in the second quarter and Casimiro's boys pounced on the opportunity to level proceedings at 34 with 18 minutes gone, thanks to a fine spell by Pasecniks (10), Tyson Pérez (6) and Cvetkovic (5). The game had become an end-to-end affair now, both teams playing short possessions, though Madrid were struggling from the three-point line. Hezonja (7) and Causeur (6) were leading the charge in offense (38-38, min.20).
Betis were playing for survival and still had their fate in their own hands. Montero exploded with a quick 9 points, alongside several Tyson Pérez triples, to take the visitors +7. We turned to Tavares hit back and the center duly responded with eight points, although the Seville-based side took the third quarter 57-61.

Another comeback
Madrid drew on their heart more than anything else in an attempt to cut the deficit. Eli was industrious, while Causeur brought the points. Betis continued to press though and Montero put his team 70-77 up with just two minutes to go. And what happened? Well, it was more of the same from this team, who have seen us get used to it since the playoff against Partizán: another stunning comeback. The team stepped it up at the back and made it impossible for their opponents to post a point, while Williams-Goss burst into life. A lay-up, a basket, a triple and another basket for nine points in a row that turned the scores around to put the game at 79-77 with six seconds to go. That wasn't all, either, the point guard pulling off some outrageous defense in the final play, blocking Montero to make sure of the win. The players warmed up in shirts supporting Vini Jr. showing their solidarity with the Brazilian in light of the recent racist abuse he has received.
