Real Madrid fans said goodbye to Mirza Delibasic on 8 December 2001. The European basketball legend passed away at the age of 47, after suffering from cancer. He played for our club for two seasons during which he showcased his tremendous talent and grace on the court. An excellent shooter and playmaker, he won a league title and an Intercontinental Cup while playing for Real Madrid.
Born in Tuzla (Bosnia-Herzegovina) on 9 January 1954, Delibasic won some of the most important titles in club and international basketball throughout his career. He won the European Cup with Bosna Sarajevo in 1979, while his record with Yugoslavia is impressive, having won the Gold Medal at the 1980 Olympic Games, the 1978 World Cup as well as the European Championships in 1975 and 1977.
Hall of Fame
Following his early retirement after a stroke, he went on to coach and become Bosnia's coach at the 1993 European Championships. Notable accolades from his career include being inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame, being decorated with the Olympic Order and being voted the best Bosnian athlete of the 20th century.
