Rüdiger started for Germany as they kicked off their World Cup campaign in Qatar with a defeat against Japan. The Real Madrid defender was in the starting eleven, playing the full 90 minutes of the match and had chances to score. Hansi Flick's side went ahead in the 33rd minute through a Gündogan penalty, but the Japanese drew level through Doan (75'). Eight minutes later, Asano was on target to give Japan the win.

The four-time world champions' next match is against Asensio and Carvajal's Spain (Sunday 27, 8pm CET), before they take on Costa Rica (Thursday 1, 8pm).
