Madrid get the better of Joventut and remain unbeaten in the league

MATCH REPORT. 16/10/2022. Edu Bueno

A 51-29 run in the second half was enough for Chus Mateo's men to register their fourth consecutive victory in this competition.

Real Madrid's unbeatable run in the league continues. The win over Joventut in a very difficult and hard-fought game saw the team record their fourth consecutive victory. They were able to withstand the Penya first half onslaught, leading by as many as eight points, and turned the game around after the break courtesy of a tremendous defensive display and a 51-29 lead. Musa (18 points and 24 PIR) and Yabusele (17 and 23) led the team in their second best offensive performance so far this season.

A return to the WiZink Center after three games on the road came against one of last year's league semi-finalists. The two teams demonstrated why they have the best offence in the competition and they set a very high offensive tempo from the start. Penya struck first with Guy and Ellenson but Madrid's response came quickly. Musa (7 points) and an outstanding Yabusele on the paint (11 points) put our team five points up at 21-16 with 7 minutes gone, a difference that disappeared before the end of a first quarter of continuous changes on the scoreboard (23-25, min. 10).

Both sides continued to score points with ease, but the visitors held the upper hand throughout the second quarter. Their scoring was more consistent and thanks to their dominance of the rebound and their success from three-point range, they built up a lead of up to 8 points (38-46, min. 18). Madrid looked more comfortable in transition than in the open court and took advantage of their opponents' fouls, especially Yabusele's, keeping at bay the visitors' efforts (45-50, min. 20).

Madrid mixed things up after the break. A much more aggressive approach in defence, closing down the rebounding and moving the ball better in attack. Penya now found it harder to play with such freedom and that was quickly evident on the scoreboard. The visitors lead was reduced to 15 points in the third quarter and our team went on to score 24 points thanks to the greater contribution of their players, headed by Deck and his 8 points (69-65, min. 30).

Madrid go direct
Chus Mateo's men finally found the way forward and they did it to perfection. They upped their level even more in defence and completely suffocated Joventut, who no longer possessed the same levels as at the start and were deflated. Llull spearheaded an attack that flourished, making almost no mistakes. Not even Carles Duran's zone could slow Madrid down. When it wasn't Musa or Hezonja from three-point range, up popped Tavares, Cornelie or Poirier on the inside. The attack-defence balance was complete and they extended the lead to a 51-29 final score, which took the difference to almost 20 points (96-79, min. 40).
