First trophy of the season up for grabs

NEWS STORY. 20/09/2022

League champions Real Madrid will go in search of their ninth Super Cup this weekend in Seville.

This weekend Real Madrid will battle it out for the Endesa Super Cup in Seville. Chus Mateo‘s league champions and winners of the previous four editions will be vying to lift their ninth trophy in this competition. The Whites will go head-to-head with Coosur Real Betis in the first semi-final, which will be played on Saturday 24th at 6:30 pm. The other tie will see Barcelona take on Joventut Badalona. This will be the first time that the new format will be used in this tournament in Seville.

Once again, the Endesa Super Cup marks the beginning of a new campaign and, since 2018, Madrid have triumphed every year to clinch their first trophy of the season. Santiago (2018), Madrid (2019) and Tenerife, on two occasions (2020 and 2021), were the scenes for the madridistas’ Super Cup success. These four recent trophies, along with those secured previously in 1984/85, 2012, 2013 and 2014, mean that the club has amassed a total of eight wins, the most by any team in the competition.

Super Cup record
8- Real Madrid (1984/85, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021)
6- Barcelona (1987, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2015)
4- Baskonia (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008)
2- Joventut (1985, 1986)
1- Valencia Basket (2017) and CB Gran Canaria (2016)

All out for another record
Real Madrid and Baskonia are level in terms of the most consecutive trophies lifted. The Basque side, called TAU Cerámica at the time, managed to secure the cup four years on the bounce, between 2005 and 2008. The Whites have the chance to beat this record, after winning the tournament four years in a row, the first of which was against the Basque team and the other three against Barcelona.

23rd edition
This year’s competition in Seville will be the 23rd edition of the Spanish Super Cup in basketball. The first four cups were contested between 1984/85 and 1987/88, when the tournament consisted of just one matchup – the winners of the Liga ACB and of the Copa del Rey. Real Madrid lifted the competition’s first ever trophy after overcoming Zaragoza in the final in February 1985. Since 2004, the tournament has been played in the current format. Our side is the team to have made the most appearances in the tournament (19), followed by Barcelona (17).
