105th anniversary of the team's fifth Copa de España

NEWS STORY. 15/05/2022

On 15 May 1917, Real Madrid beat Arenas in the decider in the final (2-1).

Today marks 105 since Real Madrid's fifth Copa de España win. Arenas were the team's opposition in the final, which needed two games to decide a champion. The first came on the 13th of May in Barcelona with both teams failing to score for the 90 minutes, plus two 10-minute extra periods. The 0-0 result forced a second clash, which took place two days later at the same venue.
The decider was evenly matched once again and epic in duration. The Basque side went ahead in the first half, but the Whites levelled through René Petit. With the scores at 1-1 at the final whistle, meaning another 20-minute extra-time was required to pick a victor. At the start of the added period, Álvarez struck the winner for the madridistas, who held on until 130’. The success saw our team lift the Copa once again, following their 1908 win.
