El Clásico returns to Santiago Bernabéu

PREVIEW. 20/03/2022

The table-toppers host Barcelona as we enter the final 10 games of the LaLiga season (9pm CET).

El Clásico returns to the Bernabéu two years and 19 days on from the sides’ last meeting at the stadium. The madridistas’ home will be at its resplendent best to host tonight’s showdown between the LaLiga leaders and the third-placed visitors (9pm CET). There are 10 matchdays of the season remaining and Real Madrid will be keen to extend their eight-game unbeaten run in LaLiga as they close in on the league crown.

Tonight’s encounter will be the third El Clásico bout of the season following the reverse match-up and the Spanish Super Cup semi-final. The madridistas came out on top on both occasions, claiming a 2-1 triumph at the Camp Nou in a contest that saw Alaba open his account with a stunning strike, whilst  Lucas Vázquez also got his name on the scoresheet that day. Meanwhile, Riyadh’s King Fahd Stadium witnessed the Whites run out 3-2 winners, with strikes from Vini Jr.Benzema and Valverde securing victory in a game that went to extra time.

“El Clásico is a very demanding game and we’ll need to be at our best,” insisted Carlo Ancelotti in his pre-match press conference. The Italian boss will have to do without Karim Benzema and Ferland Mendy, who both picked up injuries in Majorca. Meanwhile, Militão returns to the squad for this encounter.

Last five Clásicos
As well as their fine run of form in LaLiga, Madrid come into the game having prevailed in each of the last five El Clásico encounters. As for the visitors, they are riding a four-match winning streak in the league that sees them come into the matchday in third spot. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been one of their standout performers in these four wins after netting five times.
