Ancelotti: “With a little more luck we could well have got the goal"

Carlo Ancelotti spoke to the press at the Estadio de la Cerámica following the clash between Villarreal and Real Madrid: “We needed a bit more of a clinical edge. With a little more luck we could well have got the goal today. We had three one-on-ones against the goalkeeper, hit the bar twice… I'd be concerned if the team weren't creating chances to score goals. We did that and looked to create more, we just need to be more clinical".
 
“I was a bit worried in the first half because the team seemed to lack commitment, desire or aggression. The defensive side of things was radically different in the second half. We won the ball back far better and had more opportunities to shift the ball forward quickly".
 
Improved second half
“It was obvious what was missing in the first half because the team was in a pretty low block. We weren't aggressive enough in fifty-fifties, in our duels, in one-on-one situations. That's why Villarreal had greater control in the first half. The second half was a different story. The team were more aggressive without the ball and that was crucial".

“Bale had a bad injury in September when he was back playing and he’s had difficulty recovering from it. He’s struggled to stay fit in order to avoid further problems. That’s what has happened. It was important for him to have the opportunity today. Bale has shown that he’s with us and is committed”.
 
“We have to wait and see what happens over the next two days. I hope we can get everyone back. Bale has had the opportunity and he’s played well. He deserved to score and he was a threat in attack. He did exactly what was asked of him”.

“Vinicius has to understand that these things can happen and he must remain focussed on the game. He had a good game and shouldn’t waste energy on these things”.
