1-0: Real Madrid fight to the end

MATCH REPORT. 19/01/2022. Eduardo Olivera

Toril's team lost the Spanish Super Cup semi-final clash as Barcelona struck the only goal in injury time.

Real Madrid brought out all their fighting spirit but fell just short of booking their place in the Spanish Super Cup final. Alberto Toril's team, who came into the semi-final Clásico match-up almost a month after their last competitive game, were right in the clash until the final moments having put on a fine defensive display. It was only a 91st-minute Alexia goal which sent Barcelona through at their expense.

The azulgranas enjoyed the early chances of the game, but a resilient back line and Misa's superb efforts kept the scores level. Just before the half-hour mark, Patri had a fantastic opportunity to put her side ahead but the madridista shot-stopper denied her brilliantly. Meanwhile, Madrid tried their luck from range as they looked to cause problems for the opposition. On the stroke of half-time, Misa came out on top against Patri yet again when the forward was put through one-on-one.

Zornoza hits the woodwork
As the teams emerged from the dressing rooms following half-time, Jenni Hermoso was the first to threaten, but her effort skimmed just by the post, and moments later, Rolfö had another chance to put Barcelona ahead. Just as the hour ticked around, Zornoza enjoyed the best chance of the game for the madridistas, unleashing a fierce long-range strike which crashed back off the post. On 72’, Misa repelled a Paredes header, before Maite Oroz reacted immediately, only to see her shot end up in Paños' gloves. With the 90 minutes up, fortune deserted our team, the only goal of the game coming when Alexia pounced on a rebound in the box and turned the ball into the back of the net.
