A big week for Real Madrid recording their third win in just five days after beating Río Breogán at home, where they remain unbeaten in the league with a 6-0 record. A shaky start for our team was soon turned around thanks to a great second quarter that saw them build a comfortable lead going in to the last two minutes. 5 points in a row for Llull set the tone for the home-teams big push. Tavares (21 PIR) and Yabusele (14 points and 17), were the team's standout performers. Rudy made his 600th appearance for the Whites whilst Laso secured his 400th win in the ACB.
Río Breogán came into the game in better shape through an energetic and direct performance and they caught Real Madrid out with low shooting percentages, but they found it difficult to get on top of the game. Only Vukčević looked sharp and direct with his 5 points as they surprised a Real Madrid team with low shooting percentages and who found it difficult to overcome the home defence. The opponents were more effective in attack but got on top through the rebound, led by Musa (9), as they took a lead in a first quarter (20-12) opening a 10-point lead at 16-6 in the seventh minute.
Madrid hit back in the second quarter
Laso changed things around as they looked for more intensity and to freshen things up with Williams-Goss, Llull and Abalde. The American point guard allowed the team to move up an extra gear and broke the Lugo defence with his penetrations, scoring (7 points) giving an advantage to his teammates, who made the most of it with an exhibition from the three-point line (6 in this quarter). Yabusele was at it and finished the first half with a 4/5 from three and 14 points. Four consecutive three-pointers began the comeback, which turned the score around. Madrid were now in the game, improving their aggression in defence and leaving Musa on zero points. Bell-Haynes was a danger as a 13-28 run in their favour in the second quarter gave Madrid the lead at half-time (33-40).
Video.71-79: Real Madrid round off a perfect week
Real Madrid kept the run alive during for the first two minutes of the second half, starting a 0-5 run that put them 12 up (33-45). Two players stood out above the rest: Rudy and Tavares, playoong a key role throughout the third quarter to help the team contain Río Breogán and manage a comfortable lead. The forward celebrated his 600th game in a Madrid shirt with a masterclass from 6.75 metre line. Three three-pointers at a time when Paco Olmos' team closed to within six points. But the centre from Cape Verde was imposing his authority in both areas, intimidating (4 blocks) and giving his team a second chance from the offensive rebound. Heurtel joined the three-pointer party with two of his own cancelling out an inspired Bell-Haynes (51-63, min. 30).
Llull sealed the win
With Real Madrid +15 on the scoreboard thanks to Alocén's contribution (55-70, min.33), Río Breogán went all out. A good run began, raising their intensity and hitting the three-pointer. Gradually and with the support of their fans, they were 70-72 with two minutes to go. The pressure was at its peak for Laso's men, with the Lugo side on the attack. But they did not anticipate the endless array of resources and this team. In one fell swoop, Llull, with two baskets in 40 seconds (a shot and a three-pointer), crushed the home side's hopes. From 70-72 it was 70-77 going into the last minute. Yabusele, in defence, and Albade, completed a very tough game (71-79, min. 40). Fenerbahçe and Gran Canaria visit the WiZink Center next week.
