Rueda de prensa de Laso

Laso: “We face another tough test against Panathinaikos”

"We know that we're going to have to put in a good performance to win the game", explained the coach.
Pablo Laso addressed the media in the build-up to Real Madrid’s EuroLeague Round 4 match-up against Panathinaikos (Friday, 9pm CET) and the coach had the following to say about the contest and the opposition: “It’s another tough test. They’re a team that has changed players, but they have Nedovic and Papapetrou as their leading performers in the scoring stakes. They’ve got some new US players who are very athletic and they managed to compete really well in Monaco and Vitoria. They won both games and they ended up winning match against Fenerbahçe at home, in which it looked as if they were heading for defeat. That’s the EuroLeague for you, it involves that level of parity, and we know that we’re going to have to put in a good performance if we want to win”.

“The team’s in good shape and the only thing is that we face the issues that come with playing in quick succession. We’re concerned about Hanga after he had to come off, but we don’t think it’s anything major. We knew that we’d face a really demanding 10 days, what with the trips to Athens and Valencia, the EuroLeague double-game week and then rounding things off in Lugo. We’re halfway through that week and so far we’ve recorded two wins and a defeat, but the impression you get from a team isn’t purely down to wins or defeats. We had some good moments on Olympiacos’s floor and ended up losing and we had some poor moments against Monaco but won the game. We’re lacking that consistency”.

EuroLeague double-game week
“The double-game weeks are deceiving. They lost their first game, but they’ve stayed in Spain and have been able to train. Then it’s a question of how you face up to the next game after having lost and also how you approach a game after having won. The games come in very quick succession and there’s not enough time for the players to recover physically. They’ve had an extra day in which to recover and I see them as being a very dangerous team. They’ve got a new coach, are doing some different things and have retained some of the things that served them well last year. This first double-game week of the EuroLeague season is an exercise in concentration and effort for us”.

Laso: "This is an exercise in concentration and effort for us".

“In terms of the opposition, I’d have to talk about the scoring ability of Papapetrou and Nedovic. Papapetrou had a great game in Vitoria. Nedovic didn’t perform as well, but is very able in one-on-one situations and open shots. They’ve got good players on pick& roll, such as Macon and Perry. They’re very athletic on the inside. Papagiannis is a real presence and is a quick player, then there’s Evans and White…”

The opposition
“Overall, they’ve got a lot of areas of the game where they’re well covered and that has seen them come very close to winning all three games. They’ve won once and lost the other two, but have competed really well. That’s something that we have to be aware of when competing against a team like them. We have to be strong physically, we can’t take our eye off the game and it’ll call for a big effort from the whole team”.

“We’ve got 14 fit players. There’s no Thompkins or Randolph but we have got Juan Núñez and a Vukčević, who haven’t played as much of late. Vukčević played really well in Valencia and Juan Núñez is really coming on very quickly and is doing a good job. Of the 12 involved yesterday, Alocén didn’t play and so we know that he can always give us a boost in terms of tempo and aggression, which is something we may need. I trust that all of them will be fine and that we’ll ultimately be able to call on all of them. That’s the good and important thing about a team”.
