Real Madrid embark on 52nd European Cup campaign

This Wednesday sees Real Madrid begin the club's latest European Cup campaign when the team travels to the San Siro to face Inter Milan (9pm CET). This will be the 52nd time that the Whites have participated in the competition, with the club currently topping the all-time competition standings. The UEFA ranking is based on a system whereby a team is awarded two points for a win and one for a draw in all games played since the tournament's inception. Real Madrid lie top of the pile on 615 points, followed by Bayern (501) and Barcelona (460).

No other club has qualified for the European Cup as many times as Real Madrid, who have secured the crown on 13 occasions since the tournament was launched in 1955. The madridistas' closest pursuers are Benfica, who embark on their 41st campaign, whilst Bayern Munich, Ajax and Dynamo Kiev have taken part in three fewer editions.
