On the 7th of June 1993, Drazen Petrovic died in a road traffic accident in Germany. The madridista fans were lucky enough to enjoy his basketball during the 1988/89 campaign, and his performances saw him carve out his own place in Real Madrid history. Most notably was his display in the Saporta Cup final, when he dropped 62 points on the way to beating Snaidero Caserta. He also won the Copa del Rey in the same campaign.
Petrovic was born in Sibenik (Croatia) on the 22nd of October 1964 and was only 28 years old at the time of his tragic accident, but he'd already had long enough to become a European basketball legend. He made his name at KK Sibenka and Cibona Zagreb, before signing for Real Madrid. After producing some blistering performances at our club, he moved to the Portland Trail Blazers and then the New Jersey Jets in the NBA. The New York franchise retired his number 3 jersey following his death.
