The health safety measures in place this year mean that the players' annual visits to the children in the hospitals across the Spanish capital have had to be cancelled, with Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Reyes, Llull, Ivana and Thaisa, and team coaches Zinedine Zidane and Pablo Laso instead sending a message of support to the youngsters.

However, the children in Madrid's biggest hospitals and the centres where the Real Madrid Foundation runs its programmes on a permanent basis did receive presents as a part of the En Navidad, ningún niño sin regalo (No children without a gift at Christmas) campaign. The scheme is run alongside the Community of Madrid and with the support of El Corte Inglés, Falomir, the Jose Manuel Lara Foundation (Grupo Planeta) and Famosa. Those who reside at protection centres and children's' homes also benefit from the charity initiative.

The campaign, which was launched in 2005, has benefited over 500 children who have had to remain in hospital at this special time of the year. The initiative enables the children to enjoy the magic of Christmas just like any other child. Meanwhile, the Real Madrid Foundation runs a children's basketball programme in hospitals to offer the youngsters a distraction from their illnesses and the fact that they're in hospital, whilst motivating them for the duration of their stay. The value-based basketball sessions, which are adapted to each patients' circumstances, aim to improve the youngsters' physical and mental health.
