“We put on a spectacular display", added the coach.
Real Madrid clinched their place in the Champions League last-sixteen with a win over Borussia Mönchengladbach and Zidane spoke to the press following the final whistle: "I'm happy, it was a great display. We knew what we were playing for, it was a crucial game, we had to pick up points and now we're finishing as group winners. That's what we were aiming for before the game. We flew out the blocks from minute one. Our first half was spectacular and the second was fantastic too. We consolidated our performance on Saturday and played even better".

“We're working hard, we want to do a good job, prepare well for each game and perform well, that's all. I'm not thinking about what might be being said because all we can do is control what we do on the pitch. I'm thrilled for the players again because they suffer with all the things that get said on the outside".

“You can perform with or without pressure. There's no such thing as no pressure here though. We know we can't play brilliantly in every game. That's the problem, when you're in this team, they always expect you to play well. We try but it can't always be the case. Sometimes you have to dig in, there's always ups and downs. We read the game well today, particularly from a defensive standpoint because they're a team who are a real threat in the transitions and we controlled that well. In terms of our play, it was spectacular”.

“Every player who is here deserves it. You could tell me a different player every week and I'll tell you the same thing time and again, they deserve to be here. They're showing it and it's not easy to do that every three days. They can never let up, everyone has earned their place here. With Luka, his top attributes are his quality and his personality. He'll play for as long as he wants because he's got the hunger to do a great job. He's shown it throughout his career and he's said he wants to retire at Real Madrid, as many other players, including myself, have done before him. He possesses immense quality and he's just unbelievable with the ball”.

“It was the last game and we had the chance to finish top and the team managed to do so. Every player on the pitch, from start to finish, showed character. They showed their quality and I'm very pleased for them. We have to enjoy the moment, because we play again on Saturday, but we have to enjoy it today and then rest before the next match”.

“I'm obviously very pleased because we've obtained our objective. The team showed what it can do, and we knew what was at stake tonight. We showed our quality and we deserve to finish top. Karim impresses me but it's no surprise. We know what he can do. We never know if he is a number 9 or a 10. He always does amazing things and that is great for a manager”.

The message before the game
“We knew what we were playing for. I'm not going to tell you what I said to the players, these things stay in the dressing room. When you look at the game, all the Real Madrid fans can be happy and proud of the team. That's what matters to me. The fans have to be proud of the team. They know we are going to give it everything on the pitch. Today I really enjoyed the game as a fan”.

The next Ferguson at Real Madrid?
“I'm never going to be the next Alex Ferguson at Real Madrid. That's for sure. I just want to enjoy what I'm doing. I don't know how long I'll be here, so I don't think about it. I just focus on every day and how lucky I am to be at this great club with these players. I even like it when the times are hard, not only when we're winning. These moments are part of life, also as a person, and I have a lot of things to improve. But I don't know until when. I've been in Spain for a long time, in Madrid, and I want to continue a bit more”.
