Real Madrid celebrated its 450th appearance in the EuroLeague with an important victory away at Zalgiris, who went into the match in round 7 as league leaders. But just as the visitors had done against Bayern Munich one week before, they knocked the Lithuanians off the top of the table in a clash in which they had to overcome an 11-point deficit in the second half. The final three minutes saw the Whites produce a spectacular 5-12 run. Tavares led the team by producing his finest display in the EuroLeague (22 points, 12 rebounds and a PIR of 34). Campazzo was also in the double figures (19 points, 10 assists and 27 PIR). Randolph completed 250 games as a Real Madrid player.
With 300 homes fans at the Zalgirio Arena, the match began at a high offensive pace in the opening stages. Real Madrid produced its best 10 minutes in attack of the season with con 32 points to the 24 by Zalgiris. The visitors' play was fluid, as they moved the ball around brilliantly and worked hard against a side that began to show its effectiveness from the three-point line (4). In the 5th minute the entire quintet of Laso's side had already scored, with Carroll leading the way (7 points) and Tavares making his mark on the rebound. A run of 0-8 gave them the lead, supported by Campazzo producing 2 three-point field goals (11 points) in the final stretch, creating their highest lead in the 9th minute at 19-30.
Llull comes to the rescue
Zalgiris responded well with another superb offensive spell to turn the score around to 42-37 after a run of 18-5 in the space of seven minutes. During this phase, Real Madrid was not as fluid in attack, as its shooting percentages dropped leading to a much reduced scoring quarter which had a lot of breaks to its play. The hosts were much more fluid and effective from the perimeter (Rubit, Walkup, Grigonis, Lekavicius). Llull, with 9 points, led the fight-back for his side before the break, as the visitors got back to 54-48.

Victory 296 for Real Madrid on its 450th EuroLeague appearance.

The hosts extended their lead to 11 points after the re-start as the visitors were punished for their ball losses. The Whites remained around ten points behind while the third quarter passed them by (66-55, min. 25). Without the same fluidity as shown as the beginning, Real Madrid turned to Abalde and then to Tavares. Despite his three personal fouls, the center played superbly in the paint and managed to score 10 points for the madridistas to leave the scoreboard at 73-67 at the end of the third quarter.
Tavares and Campazzo prove decisive in comeback
Real Madrid stepped it up in the fourth quarter and changed the inertia of the game in three minutes, with a 2-11 run thanks to two 3-pointers from Thompkins and another from Campazzo (75-78, min. 33). But the hosts once again reacted well and recovered the initiative with the score at 85-81 in the 37th minute. However, Real Madrid had the mental strength to keep fighting and produce its best basketball at the crucial moment. The team was now solid in defensive and in attack the big figure of Tavares emerged again, putting on his best game display in the EuroLeague. Three straight baskets, an offensive rebound and two free throws made a 5-12 run in the final three minutes. Campazzo, who finished with another double-double, and Llull sealed the victory for Laso's men from the free throw line (90-93, min. 40). On Sunday, the Whites face their next league match against Urbas Fuenlabrada (12:30 pm, CET).
