NEWS | 06/08/2020“These games have to be played with high levels of intensity and concentration", said the defender.
“We know we need a strong group full of leaders if we're going to win the Champions League and that won't change. We know how important Sergio is and we all have to put on a great display to qualify and keep fighting to the end. That's no different".
The team's form
“We're in good shape. We enjoyed a really positive run to win LaLiga. We all worked very well from a physical point of view. The preparations have been different to what we're used to, and we've had time to prepare for this like we usually prepare for a final. Concentration has been sky-high, as ever, we've worked on every aspect of our game, as we always to do improve wherever we can. We come into the game full of confidence after our recent results and more rested than we would have been had we played the match in March. We hope we're ready to win it”.
“He's a hugely important player for us but we know we're a group, we all have a role to play. I always help my teammates out, that's how I play, I like to provide cover for the others. I speak to my teammates a lot from a tactical point of view in the dressing room".
“It's always tough to draw comparisons. We're thrilled to have Karim with us. He's had an exceptional season, we know the quality he has and what he can do. I think he's aware of that quality too and he knows we have absolute faith in him, which is the key thing. I don't like to make comparisons but the most important thing is that Karim has the support of the team, the coach and the fans. He's in fantastic form and he'll be crucial for us in a game like tomorrow".
Champions League match
“We know it's a tough clash against a side that attacks very well and has real pace up top. They play some great football. We're faced with a challenge, we always like battling it out with the best and a competition like the Champions League gives you the chance to do just that. We have to score and win by a margin, and that's not easy against very good opposition. We always believe in our chances and we fight to the end. That's the way we are, so we go into these games full of excitement and the desire to do a great job".
“Over the course of the season we've seen how the team has got stronger. We've built up our confidence bit by bit and improved in every facet of the game. We've defended very well. When a team concedes so few goals, that's because the forwards and midfielders help out in defence too. We've seen a team that work for each other, that's been the key to us winning LaLiga and we've got much better in every respect. The confidence we've developed has helped things go the way we want”.
“We're aware of our qualities. We know we're up against a very good team and we'll give it everything we've got to qualify. That's the important thing. We're focused on that and making sure we deliver on the details that could make all the difference. That's how we see the game and it's the key thing. Then, we'll see what happens, but we're approaching it with the right attitude and a desire to win it and perform well".
The best Varane
“I hope the best is yet to come. I always want to improve. I want to progress and work on any aspect of my game that I can make better. I hope I can reach an even higher level. I work hard every day to do just that. I'm more mature now and the experience I've gained over the years makes me a better player. I always want to work towards improving so the best version of Varane comes in the future".
Lack of goals?
“No. I think it's very clear that we need to attack and score goals in tomorrow's game but we have to make sure we maintain a balance against a good attacking side. Goals can come from a whole range of players in our team. We have players with different qualities who complement each other. We trust all the players and we can make changes, too, which could make the difference in these kinds of games. We have a deep squad and we have to be clinical and take our chances when they arise”.
“The stadium being empty is a new feeling for both teams. We are playing at their ground but the Champions League is an emotional competition and having the fans for or against you does have an effect. There's no advantages in these things. We have to adapt to the situation, which is something different to what we are used to".
