Today marks 48 years since Real Madrid
lifted their 15th LaLiga
trophy. On the 14th of May 1972, the Whites clinched the title by beating Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabéu
(4-1) on the final day of the campaign. The madridistas thrashed the Andalusian side with goals from Amancio
in the first half, and a Pirri
brace after the break.
There were 18 teams in the league that year, with Real Madrid finishing top with 47 points. They were pursued by Valencia (45) and Barcelona (43). Pirri netted 11 goals, and Santillana managed 10 as the team's top scorers. The madridista squad was led by Miguel Muñoz, who picked up his ninth and final Liga trophy in the dugout.
