NEWS | 08/03/2020“Every player can contribute, that's why we're Real Madrid”, said Garuba.
Pablo Laso and Usman Garuba assesses Real Madrid's win over Casademont Zaragoza to seal what was their third victory of the week. The Whites' coach explained: “It was a great performance from us, we read the game well from the start and were intelligent. We were very good defensively in the first half, playing some good stuff. That made the difference in the end final. In the second period we were good up top, had control and maintained the lead. I'm very pleased because we've won four games inside a week. We know the physical demands and I'd like to congratulate the players on their mental strength. We also beat a direct rival and got basket average back on our side”.
“Garuba was very good and we knew he was a player who could bring us real energy in certain situations. He defended well and was smart in offense. He gave us that push we really needed at times. He's been an important part of the team for me from day one and I'm proud of him”.
“We have a very demanding schedule. We often need double players in certain positions because it's tough to keep the rhythm up. It's to be expected that they have better or worse spells. Laprovittola is playing with confidence and is a great player. He's really helping us”.
“Mejri left training with an injury yesterday so we'll have to wait on the tests. Deck will be back this week, hopefully on Tuesday or Wednesday. Mickey completed part of yesterday's session; Randolph is starting to use the ball again; Llull is better but he needs some recovery time and I hope to have Taylor back in Madrid next week. In general terms, it's quite an extensive injury list. The team looks in good shape but of course I'd like to have everyone back.
“I always say the academy has to push us on. The efforts of the players who know Real Madrid and have been working for years to get to this day, it's wonderful. It's the reason we're seeing players like Garuba, Tisma, Nakic, Spagnolo. We're still getting guys who aspire to play in the first team. I'm thrilled to have these kinds of players, like Spagnolo, who's having a great season with his team. The most important thing is for them to focus on doing well with their teams”.
“When you assess the squad in summer you have to think about potential problems that may arise. Doncic grew a lot in the last couple of years and now he's in the NBA. We can't plan for that. I've always believed Garuba could play in the first team. They earn it, I don't gift them the chance. I value that hunger and energy they give off, that's what we ask for”.
Garuba: “I try to bring intensity”
“I'm pleased with today's game, it was a pretty important one. I try to bring intensity whenever I'm out on court, I like to play with real energy. We're on a great run of form despite the injuries and I try and do my bit when I'm called upon. We can all do that. We're Real Madrid and if we're here it's because we can do a great job”.
"I'm pleased for Spagnolo and his debut, and for Tisma as well, who got his first basket for the first team. They should try not to be nervous and just play like they know how. It's not easy, but the players and coaches help you out. Reyes really helps me every day and I love being around him”.
